位于新疆维吾尔自治区巴音郭楞蒙古自治州若羌县，与青海和西藏相毗邻，面积450万公顷。地理坐标为：东经87°10′～91°18′，北纬36°00′～37°49′。平均海拔在4500米以上，境内最高峰木孜塔格峰海拔6973米。保护区四周高山环绕，现代冰川、高原湖泊和高原沙漠分布其间，孕育着藏野驴、藏羚羊、野牦牛、野骆驼及黑颈鹤、藏雪鸡、白肩雕、玉带海雕等种类繁多的珍禽异兽。
