研究自然灾害发生、发展、演化规律、机理及其影响的一门力学和地球科学交叉的力学学科。其中，自然灾害或环境灾害指的是人和生物周围的环境条件，如温、湿、风、气压、降水（雪）、大气组分、水位、水流、海浪、水质、坡体（地基）稳定性等大幅度急剧变化，从而危及人类的生命和财产安全的极端事件，也称为自然灾害。它区别于诸如：瓦斯突出、工程塌方、粉尘爆炸、火灾燃烧、化学品泄漏等导致的工业（程）灾害，除了核爆炸或核泄露外，一般说来环境（自然）灾害的影响程度更严重，范围更广。由于环境灾害发生的原因是由异常的自然现象引起，与自然界的物质和能量输运有关，所以，它也是环境力学的重要组成部分。
