The means of interrupting a program and proceeding with it at a later time; this is accomplished by saving the contents of the program counter and other specific registers, storing them in reserved areas, starting the new instruction sequence, and upon completion, reloading the program counter and registers to return to the original program, and reenabling the interrupt.
