pitman [`pit·mǝn] ENGINEERING 1. A worker in or near a pit, as in a quarry, mine, garage, or foundry. 2. On a pumping unit, an arm connecting the crank with the walking beam for converting rotary motion to reciprocating motion. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING In an automotive steering system, the arm that is connected to the shaft of the steering gear sector and the tie rod, and swings back and forth as the steering wheel is turned. Also known as pitman arm. |
