硬骨鱼纲（Osteichthyes）鲟形目（Acipenseriformes）鲟科（Acipenseridae）鲟属（Acipenser）一种。又称长江鲟、沙腊子、小腊子。为中国特有物种，是鲟科鱼类中淡水定居型鱼类，属长江大型经济鱼类之一。因外形同分布于长江中的中华鲟很相似，渔民把个体大、洄游性的一种（中华鲟）称“大蜡子”，而把体型较小，淡水定居性的一种（达氏鲟）称“沙蜡子”“小蜡子”。鳇、鳣、鱏、玉版、鮥等词语在古籍或俗语中作为鲟鱼的通称，有时也用来指达氏鲟。1989年被列为国家一级重点保护动物，也是世界自然保护联盟（IUCN）列为极危（CR）物种，濒危野生动植物国际贸易公约（CITES）附录II保护动物。
