属于印欧语系日耳曼语族西日耳曼语支，主要分布于南非、纳米比亚、博茨瓦纳、马拉维、赞比亚。为南非宪法所规定之11种官方语言中的一种，同时也是纳米比亚宪法所承认的一种国家语言（英语是该国的官方语言）。使用人数约620万，其中包括100万同时使用阿非利坎语和英语的双语人口。又称南非荷兰语，又译阿非利堪斯语或斐语。
