经典场的能动张量是场量的函数。对于量子化的物质场，如果场算符在流形每一点都有定义，则就可直接得到其能动张量。但场算符只有作为一种时空分布才有明确的定义，直接将经典物质场能动张量中的场变量用场算符来代替会导致发散。因此在量子场论中定义场的能动张量必须采用某种重正化的手段。
