现实世界的网络中大部分都会承载一定的负载，包括物质、能量或信息等。这就需要节点（边）必须要有一定的负载处理能力，如果分配到节点（边）上的负载超出了其处理能力，那么节点（边）就会因过载而失效。失效节点（边）上的负载就会按照一定的分配策略被重新分配到其他完好节点（边）上，从而有可能引发新一轮的节点（边）过载失效，周而复始直到没有新节点失效为止，这个过程称为级联失效。
