中国现存规模最大、保存最完好的古建筑群。位于明清北京城内中部，自明永乐十九年（1421）至清末（1911），是明清两个朝代的皇宫。古代皇宫是禁地，又有紫微垣为天帝所居的神话，故称宫城为紫禁城。1925年在此建故宫博物院后，通称故宫。1961年定为全国重点文物保护单位。1987年列入《世界遗产名录》。
