有广义和狭义之分。狭义指当事人在诉讼中就案件事实，尤其是作为诉讼请求根据或反驳诉讼请求根据的事实，向法院所作的陈述。广义包括关于诉讼请求的陈述，关于与案件有关的其他事实的陈述，关于证据来源的陈述，关于案件性质和法律问题的陈述等。在各种陈述中，只有为证明案件事实而作的事实陈述才是证据法意义上的当事人陈述。
