在雨水汇集之前，或在雨水到达足够引起破坏的速率或流量之前，进行拦截或控制。地表径流指降水后除直接蒸发、植物截留、渗入地下、填充洼地外，由于重力作用在地面运动，并流进小溪、沼泽、河流、湖泊和海洋的水流。园林中多以地面排除雨水为主，一方面排除过多的地表径流，同时消除降雨带来的水土侵蚀。
