最早由C.von林奈（1735）提出，初为对现生兔形类和啮齿类两类小型哺乳动物的合称，因为它们都发育有一对终生生长（无根）且具有“啃啮”（gnawing）功能的门齿（DI2/di2）。此外，它们也没有犬齿，前臼齿都很退化。有人建议将啮型类提升为啮型大目（Grandorder），定义为现生的啮齿类和兔形类的共同祖先及其后裔形成的支系。它包括了由啮齿目（Rodentia）和混齿目（Mixodontia，通常认为是啮齿类的基干类群）组成的单门齿类和由兔形目（Lagomorpha）及模鼠兔目（Mimotonida，通常认为是兔形类的基干类群）组成的双门齿类。
