在生物学、古生物学的分类、命名中，有时由于研究材料的局限、信息交流的限制（特别是早年科学文献的发行、流通受限），或是研究者的疏忽，对于某个物种归属的认识会有不同，来自同一产地相同层位的同一批化石材料，或者是同一产地相同层位不同学者于不同时间采集的相同化石材料，被不同研究者先后命名为不同的物种，这就造成了名称虽异，但实指同物的现象。又称同物异名。
