当金属材料特征结构尺寸（通常指晶粒尺寸）低于某一临界尺寸（十几或几纳米）时，随特征结构尺寸的减小，材料硬度（或强度）保持不变或不断降低的现象。又称反常霍尔-佩奇现象。通常情况下，随金属材料特征结构尺寸的减小，材料硬度（或强度）不断增加的现象，称为霍尔-佩奇现象。
