地理位置在北纬12°以南的一个中国南海区渔场。与越南、菲律宾、马来西亚、文莱和印度尼西亚等国邻接，北部是中国西沙和中沙群岛，面积82万多平方千米。南沙群岛北起雄南礁，东至海马滩，南达曾母暗沙，西倚万安滩，由230多座岛、洲、礁、沙、滩组成（大多由珊瑚礁形成）。众多的岛屿、暗礁、浅滩、沙洲和珊瑚礁环境，不仅容易形成局部涌升流将底层丰富的营养成分带到表层，为浮游植物和浮游动物的繁殖、生长创造良好条件，而且也为鱼类等生物提供了饵料充足、适宜栖息和易躲避敌害的场所。
