1879年（清光绪五年）5月，上海公共租界工部局电气工程师毕晓浦以7.46千瓦蒸汽机为动力，带动自励式直流发电机发电，点燃碳极弧光灯，标志着中国第一盏电灯的问世。1882年7月26日，英国人在上海大马路31号A（今南京东路190号）创办的中国第一座发电厂正式发电，点亮了沿外滩到虹口招商局码头串接的15盏弧光灯，标志着中国电力工业的起步。
