针对在一组数据中，既有真实的生存数据和右删失数据，又含有左删失数据的情况，基于一个自相容算法，B.W.特恩布尔（B.W.Turbbull）（1974）首先就分组数据情形提出了生存函数的一种非参数估计方法。在此基础上，其他学者在1985年和1987年就非分组数据情形也给出了估计方法。两种估计法是相似的，统称为Turnbull估计。
