利用非转移型等离子弧与高速气流混合时出现的“扩展弧”，得到稳定聚集的超音速等离子焰流，同时将被喷涂材料（粉末）送入高温、高速等离子体射流中，喷涂材料迅速受热并形成熔融或半熔融的熔滴，熔滴以超过音速的速度撞击到经预处理的基体材料表面，在表面发生能量转换、变形、铺展、流散和润湿，并以约10K/s的速度极快地冷却、凝固、堆垛，形成涂层的一种热喷涂方法。
