1983年，研究人员观察到胃肠道低度恶性B细胞淋巴瘤的细胞在形态学上与黏膜相关淋巴组织的细胞相似，提出了黏膜相关淋巴组织淋巴瘤的概念。之后，发现肺、唾液腺及甲状腺的B细胞淋巴瘤也具有胃黏膜相关淋巴瘤的特征，这一概念进而被扩展应用到其他结外淋巴结淋巴瘤。2001年，世界卫生组织（WHO）淋巴造血系统肿瘤分类将该肿瘤命名为MALT型结外边缘区B细胞淋巴瘤。简称MALT淋巴瘤。
