由于南大洋和北大西洋表层海水在海面风力的驱动以及结冰、融冰、降水和蒸发等热盐效应作用下，造成大范围的海水密度分布不均匀，使南大洋形成的深层水向北流动，在北半球海洋深部上翻并向南流动；在北大西洋形成的深层水也一并向南流动，这些南向的洋流在南大洋西风驱动的上升流作用下最终回到南大洋，进而形成的洋流。
