分为语言内部和谐和语言外部和谐。前者指的是语音、词汇、语法、语义、修辞等的和谐，语言单位之间组合的和谐，语言要素之间配合的和谐等。学界讨论的语言和谐一般指语言外部和谐，意指多语社会中各种语言(包括不同的方言)平等相处、功能互补的语言关系类型，如少数民族语言和通用语之间、少数民族语言之间、不同方言之间、不同支系语言之间、境内外语言之间、通用语和方言之间等不同类型的语言和谐。
