泛指以昆虫为宿主的病毒。既能在脊椎动物体内或高等植物体内增殖，又能在昆虫体内增殖的病毒很多，如动物病毒中的披膜病毒科甲病毒属的全部成员；黄病毒科、布尼亚病毒科的大部分成员；还有植物病毒中呼肠孤病毒科与弹状病毒科的许多成员。从生物学角度讲，这些病毒是将昆虫作为临时宿主或介体，用以传播，因此被视为虫媒病毒。它们与昆虫建立了平衡关系，虽能在昆虫体内增殖复制，但一般对昆虫不显示病原性、不引起昆虫发病死亡。狭义的专指以昆虫为主要的或唯一的宿主并对昆虫有致病性的病毒。
