清热解毒药。又名忍冬花、双花。始载于《新修本草》。忍冬科植物忍冬（Lonicera japonica）的干燥花蕾或带初开的花。在宋代及以前多以忍冬的藤、叶入药，而到了明代，对花的应用越来越多，并逐渐发展至茎、叶和花并用。明代以后，人们对温病学的认知、金银花功效的掌握更加全面，更强调用花，《得配本草》也写道“藤、叶皆可用花尤佳”。后来，忍冬的茎叶逐渐分化为另一种独立的药材忍冬藤。
