阿曼原名马斯喀特素丹国。1970年8月改名为阿曼素丹国（简称阿曼）。4000多年前被两河流域的苏美尔人称为马干国。位于阿拉伯半岛东南部，扼波斯湾通往印度洋的门户。面积30.95万平方千米，人口455.9万（2018）。居民绝大部分是阿拉伯人，信奉伊斯兰教，其中90%以上属伊巴德教派。官方语言为阿拉伯语，通用英语。首都马斯喀特。
