位于甘肃省民勤县，地处石羊河流域下游，其地理坐标为：北纬38°10´～39°09´，东经103°30´～103°57´。东北被腾格里沙漠包围，西北有巴丹吉林沙漠环绕，海拔1350米，面积38.99万公顷，约占民勤县国土面积的1/4、武威市国土面积的1/8，因区内有汉代连城、古城遗址而得名，是中国面积最大的荒漠生态类型国家级自然保护区。保护区内森林覆盖率达33.1%，有保存完好的绵刺、柠条、柽柳、白刺、霸王、猫头刺、沙拐枣、麻黄等天然灌木林18.48万公顷。
