缓流地表水中磷、氮、有机物等植物性营养物质富集，引起藻类及其他浮游生物迅速繁殖，其他水生生物大量死亡，死亡后生物残体经微生物降解又大量消耗溶解氧，进而造成水体中溶解氧急剧下降的现象。因富营养化水体中占优势的浮游藻类的颜色不同，水面往往呈现蓝色、红色、褐色、乳白色等，又称藻类暴发；在海洋中则称赤潮。
